The Rep’s 49th Season continues with playwright Ayad Akhtar’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Disgraced. It’s an intriguing, difficult, controversial and important play on many levels.

In Disgraced we meet Amir Kapoor, a successful corporate lawyer living his dream life in Manhattan. He’s got it all—a prestigious job, a closet full of Italian suits, an Upper East Side apartment, and a beautiful wife by his side. But as Amir discovers, everything can change in the blink of an eye. His carefully constructed world begins to unravel when he’s quoted in The New York Times defending a controversial Imam. His colleagues read the article and see Amir not as a highly touted and successful associate just a step away from making partner, but for the first time, as a Muslim.

Things get even worse when Amir and his wife host a dinner party. In the evening’s conversation, issues arise that force Amir to question his heritage, his culture, his very identity. Lies and deceptions are brought to the forefront, and reveal difficult things about Amir, but also about the hidden aspects of our world.
